FURRY FRIENDS FARM

CELEBRATED WORLD ANIMAL DAY

4th OCTOBER, 2009

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT : 5 very special dogs : Jojo, Kuning, Jewel, Hope and Joy joining in for the cake cutting ceremony

Furry Friends Farm, an Animal Sanctuary for abandoned dogs and cats celebrated World Animal Day in high & cheerful spirit. The event was held in conjunction with its 3rd Anniversary and the official launching of its new 2-acre premise in Kundang.

Furry Friends Farm would like to express a Big Thank You to the management of Hotel Armada, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia for sponsoring the Furry Friends Farm 3rd Anniversary Cake.

The event kicked-off with the welcome speech by Furry Friends Farm Founder,  Ms Sabrina Yeap.  Sabrina who single-handedly run the Farm with the help of few volunteers since 2006 thanked everyone for sharing this special moment with Furry Friends Farm and the furkids. Sabrina said “ I wish to thanked all the volunteers who without them, Furry Friends Farm will not go this far. I would like to emphasize on the importance of volunteer work as this is an important element in any charity based institutional. Furry Friends Farm is the living proof to it. From a humble 1 volunteer, we have expanded to 6 permanent volunteers and countless volunteers who helped in many ways. Today, we are proud to show to the public our newly one- month old premise. The Sanctuary is however, not complete yet. More construction coming up with more facilities for dogs and cats”.

On the morning of the World Animal Day, 4th October,  Bean was the first cat to greet us,
" Happy World Animal Day ! "
Princess, the female cat was attracted to the colorful World Animal Day banner.
Animal Lovers brought cat food for the rescued cats at Furry Friends Farm.
All the cats were so excited and rushed to the garden.

Later, the cake-cutting was organised on stage and was ‘attended’ by 5 very special canine celebrities. Spotted on stage was Kuning the hero dog which helped in the search and rescue mission of abandoned dogs at the Pulau Selat Kering. In May 2009, a major rescue mission was launched to rescue the stray dogs abandoned at Pulau Selat Kering. The strays were left to fend themselves in the uninhabited island. Up-to-date, 30 Pulau Selat Kering  have been rescued and the canines are now residing at Furry Friends Farm with other 100 dogs and cats.  After the cake cutting - Sabrina was seen announcing the closing of the Rescue Mission of Pulau Selat Kering by Furry Friends Farm. She also mentioned that, the last dog spotted on the Island has been rescued and is named Sakura. Sakura is now part of the Furry Friends Farm family.

The Dr Dog team, seen in the photo is Dr Lassie with her Guardian, Pauline.

Sabrina mentioned that “ I also wish that Malaysian will be more considerate towards stray animal and hope that this sad incident would not happen again. Strays come from irresponsible owner who dump their animal & failed to sterilize them. From there they multiply. Dumping them to an island would not solve the never-ending story of strays. Its cruel and inhuman.  We have to look into long-term solution such to instill responsible pet ownership. Apart from that, public should stop buying animals from pet shop. Instead, they should adopt pet from shelter and save lives.  Today, on the celebration of the World Animal Day let us all pay tribute to all the animals for the contribution to humankind. Let us all pray for the betterment of animal welfare in Malaysia, which has long due. Furry Friends Farm also plan to have the World Animal Day celebration as part of our calendar of event”

Everyone was later called for a treat over vegetarian lunch. Dr. Dogs was seen mingling with the guests. Dr. Dog is an animal-assisted therapy program initiated by Sabrina Yeap in collaboration with Animal Asia (AAF). The canines are selected through good temperament and behavior. The program has successfully visited Old Folks Home and Orphanages providing animal-therapy to its residents.

The cats enjoyed the delicious sponsored cat food.

Its Finger Licking Good !                                                       After a heavy meal.

Guests had a good time, spending quality times with Furry Friend’s Farm dogs and cats and getting to know more about the Sanctuary.

WORLD ANIMAL DAY 2009 CHILDREN ARTS COMPETITION

Furry Friends Farm had also successfully organised the World Animal Day art contest in one of the Pre-school in Kuala Lumpur. Furry Friends Farm 3rd Ambassador, Jewel visited the school and the children. The children  and teachers were told the story of Jewel and were sorry to know that she had met with road accidents twice and had to survive with only three-legged since then.

An Animal Welfare Education with true story of  the rescue of a stray dog, Jewel aimed to motivate children aged between 4 years old to 6 years old to be kind to stray animals.

The art contest was carried out with great success. There were thirty one contestants participating with great enthusiasm and the children really enjoyed in drawing their favourite pets.

Jewel presented prizes to winners in the contest. It was a great fun day for Jewel and the children at school.

Hitam Returns to the Fish Farm After His Medical Checkup

PostDateIcon Tuesday, 13 October 2009 01:07 | PostAuthorIcon Author: Administrator | PDF Print E-mail

After having his medical check-up with all the necessary treatment done, Hitam spent a short but a happy time at the farm with many newfound friends, along with his friends which he and Kuning helped saved from Pulau Selat Kering. Although, the fish farm owner was insintent that Hitam and Kuning to be returned to him immediately after their vaccination and medical treatment, the boys stayed on the farm for their much necessary observation period as it was very important for both of the dogs to not go into water and not to get wet. After getting the agreement from the fish farm owner to not allow Hitam to get wet at the fish farm, Hitam returned to the kelong.

On 29th September 2009, Hitam, who was in tip-top condition, returned to the kelong with Sabrina along with Connie and Daniel. Sabrina brought along a big bag of 22kg dog food with a new metal bowl for Hitam to enjoy his food in. As the journey of Hitam's return was documented, we are very happy that we managed to look after the welfare of both the heroes, Hitam and Kuning.

Furry Friends Farm Looks Into The Welfare Of Kuning and Hitam

Hitam and Kuning greets Sabrina and Connie                 Hitam and Kuning getting ready for their trip to the mainland

To all readers,

Kuning and Hitam being taken to their medical checkup by Sabrina with Connie and Daniel. Sabrina and FFF is funding for the dogs' medical checkups and any medical expenses from the checkup.

This is the dogs' first ever proper medical checkup for both Kuning and Hitam since their escape from Pulau Selat Kering.

Their medical checkup would include overall checkup on the dogs' condition, vaccination jabs, treatment to prevent heartworm and deworming treatment and last but not least, the boys were both neutered.

The plan was to bring them back to the mainland for their medical checkup in mid-July 2009, after the rescue mission ended with the rescue of the last dog spotted (Sakura), was delayed pending obtaining the fish farm owner's permission. In mid-September 2009, Sabrina and two dedicated volunteers went to the fish farm to look in on Kuning and Hitam. Kuning was not well, he looked very thin and was not eating well. Adi the staff at the fish farm was helpful and concerned over the dogs' welfare. Hitam was okay though.

After the treatment, both Hitam and Kuning stayed at Furry Friends Farm for the short observation period that is considered important immediately after vaccination. However the fish farm owner insisted on his dogs being returned to him immediately.

" A temporary agreement was reached : Hitam would be returned to the fish farm at first opportunity while Kuning stayed on at the Furry Friends Farm to receive more treatment for his minor kidney condition. The owner agreed that Hitam would not be allowed to go into water or get water for the days after his return to the fish farm. "

On this note, thus Hitam returned to the fish farm on 29th September 2009, Tuesday with Sabrina with Connie and Daniel. Sabrina bought him a 22kg bag of dog food and a brand new metal bowl. Hitam was in tip top condition after being given the all-clear by the vet after his medical checkup. He managed to spent some very happy times at Furry Friends Farm surrounded by friends two-legged and four-legged. During the journey back to the jetty, as Sabrina remembers it . . .

"Hitam leaned against my shoulder in my small car on the way to the jetty. I told him that he was a good boy and I would definitely pay him a visit every month. He wagged his tail and licked my shoulder as if saying Thank You to me."

Hitam's journey back to the fish farm was documented and it was such a sweet memory to see that we managed to take care of the welfare of a Stray dog whom had been so courageously assisted our rescue mission in luring all the remaining dogs stranded and suffered in the mangrove island.

THE ANIMAL SAVIOUR

PostDateIcon Monday, 12 October 2009 11:11 | PostAuthorIcon Author: ashley wong | PDF Print E-mail

THE ANIMALS’ SAVIOUR

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of human society.
I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread,
sadness and betrayal.
And I was angry.
“God," I said, "this is terrible!
Why don't you do something?"
God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly.
"I have done something," He replied.
"I created You."

UPDATE ON JASPER - We Are Rooting For You!!

PostDateIcon Sunday, 20 September 2009 12:44 | PostAuthorIcon Author: Administrator | PDF Print E-mail

Updates on Jasper :

Dear Readers,

Thank you so much for your all your warm wishes and prayers for Jasper. Thank you for rooting for Jasper. We know you would be anxiously waiting praying and waiting for his recovery, here we provide you the updates so you can follow together on his progress to recovery.

13/09/09 : Sabrina visited Jasper in the morning. Jasper was asleep but woke up when Sabrina approached. He seemed to recognise Sabrina's voice and stood up firmly and wagged his tail excitedly and tried to lick Sabrina's fingers as she greeted him. He was still heavily bandaged. The vet said Jasper was doing well. Let's hope for the best and pray for Jasper's quick recovery.

14/09/09 : It is the 6th day of Jasper's admission to the veterinary centre. Dr. Kiew showed Sabrina some photos of Jasper. One quarter of the open skull is covered by new grown tissues. Jasper is healing well.

19/09/09 : More good news. Today is the 10th day of Jasper's admission to the clinic. 3 quarters of the open skull is already covered by new grown tissues. He has put on a lot of weight too !

It is AMAZING that Jasper's eye has healed itself despite the horrific injuries which had caused its blurred vision at the beginning. Sadly, his left eye was too badly damaged and cannot be saved. Jasper has lost his left eye. He will be "handicapped" without his left eye permanently !

"Thanks to all of your prayers and warm wishes and support, Jasper is healing. The following photos were taken during various dates when the vet changed Jasper's wound dressing in September 2009. "

OUR BRAVE jasper IS on ROAD to recovery!

06/10/09 : Jasper's determination to survive has not only touched the hearts of the vet and all the staff at the veterinary clinic where he is being treated, but has also been a guidance in out lives that :

"Nothing is impossible. we ought to be courageous to face all difficulties and never give up during hard times."

07/10/09 : Jasper is doing very well with the tender loving care from all the staff at the clinic. He has put on a lot of weight too !

WE ARE THEIR HEROES

We Are Their Heroes

Copyright © Jim Willis 2001, all rights reserved

If you worry that you have not made a difference, you have,
for only those who do not worry about it have not.
If you feel overwhelmed, if the weight of problems is too heavy to bear,
remember it is a shared burden
and the strength of numbers can accomplish much.
If you think society and government are blind,
it only serves to remind that we need to change
one mind at a time, one law after another.
We effect change by cooperation, not by isolation.
If you consider that we cannot save them all,
and what difference does one make?,
you ought to know the joy of the one who is saved.
Mourn those we cannot save, it is a eulogy to their being.
Do not let their loss be in vain.
Be kind to yourself, remember your needs
and those of your family and friends of every species.
If you give everything, what will you have left for yourself,
or for them?
Strive to be happy and healthy. You are needed.
Achieving balance in life is a lifelong struggle.
We who help those who do not have all that they need
should be among the most grateful for what we have.
Be proud of your accomplishments, not your opinions.
The quality of your efforts is more important than the quantity.
Forgive your own deficiencies - sometimes your caring is sufficient.
Everyone can do something, it is up to you to do the thing you can.
A kind word and a gentle touch can change a life.
If anger wells up within you, because people are the problem,
remember your humanity and that people are also the solution.
Concentrate on specific needs, pay attention to the individual -
they make up the whole.
See beyond the unlovable, the unattractive,
the impure and the wounded -
see that their spirit is as deserving as the rest. Help them heal.
Their eyes are windows to their soul
and the mirror of your sincerity.
All species, all beings, share this Earth in a chain of life.
Care more about what makes us alike than what separates us.
Policies, rules and regulations are not infallible.
Apply them judiciously, interpret them wisely.
No decision based purely on money is ever the right one.
Listen to your heart. Sometimes we have to do that which
we are most afraid of.
Be true to yourself and your beliefs.
Family may abandon you,
friends may disappoint you, strangers will ridicule you.
People shun what they do not understand.
Help them to understand - kindly, softly, gently.
Those who do not respect all life are to be pitied.
Often the wrongdoer is as in need of help as his victims.
Forgive, then teach by example.
Educate yourself or you cannot hope to teach others.
No action based in hatred is ever right
and anger drowns out wisdom.
Yours may be a voice crying in the wilderness,
make it a voice to be respected.
Listen more than you talk, be courteous and reliable.
Learn to ask for help. Never waiver from the truth.
Know that it takes a lot of strength to cry
And with every defeat, we learn.
All Creation celebrates that which is in its own best interest.
The Children are our hope - nurture them.
Nature is our legacy - protect it.
The Animals are our brethren - learn from them.
Your rewards will not be material, but they will be meaningful,
and the courage of your convictions can survive anything.
We are small boats cast adrift on a cruel sea,
but someday the tide will turn toward a safe harbor.
No matter how dark the storm clouds,
or deep the pain of heartbreak - never forget:
We are their heroes.
